On 20 April 2023, STORAG ETZEL GmbH once again invites you to an event on the topic of "Energy Logistics in the Northwest" as part of the nationwide "Logistics Day" in the info box of the cavern info centre at the Etzel site. As part of a multimedia presentation, interested visitors can learn more about the background to the construction of caverns in Etzel. Furthermore, the energy logistics, i.e. storing and retrieving of energy sources, will be explained. This will be followed by a tour of the Etzel cavern facility and a visit to the nearby STORAG ETZEL logistics service centre.

About us: 

STORAG ETZEL GmbH is the most important independent supplier of cavern storage facilities in Germany, making a valuable contribution to energy security and gas grid stability in Germany and north-western Europe. At the Etzel site in East Frisia, the company has been building, maintaining and leasing underground storage capacity for gas and oil since 1971. Tenants are national and European oil storage organisations and international companies from the energy sector. Among other things, part of the crude oil reserves of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are stored in Etzel.

Currently, about 3.9 billion cubic metres of gas are stored here in 51 caverns. A further 24 caverns can store around 10 million cubic metres of crude oil. Beyond the 75 caverns that currently exist, there is the potential to expand to 24 more storage caverns in the Etzel salt dome.

THE ETZEL SITE IS READY FOR THE FUTURE

In addition to storing fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, renewable energies can also be stored in caverns, e.g. by converting surplus electricity into hydrogen (H2) or synthetic natural gas (SNG = methane). The operator STORAG ETZEL has already successfully converted oil caverns to gas storage in its operating history. In the context of the energy transition and decarbonisation, the H2CAST Etzel research project is specifically investigating the conversion of underground storage facilities from gas/oil to hydrogen. The project has been funded by the state of Lower Saxony and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection since 2022.
